BAN CONDEMNS TERRORIST BOMBINGS IN SYRIA, VOICES CONCERN OVER CONTINUING VIOLENCE

BAN CONDEMNS TERRORIST BOMBINGS IN SYRIA, VOICES CONCERN OVER CONTINUING VIOLENCE
New York, Apr 30 2012 6:10PM
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned today's terrorist bombing in the Syrian city of Idlib, as well as last week's bomb blast in the capital, Damascus, saying he remains gravely concerned by reports of continuing violence, killings and other abuses in the country.

"While noting improvements in areas where UN monitors are deployed, the Secretary-General remains gravely concerned by reports of continued violence, killing and abuses in Syria in recent days," said a <"http://www.un.org/sg/statements/index.asp?nid=6034">statement issued by his spokesperson.

The blast in Damascus occurred on Friday, and, according to media reports, scores of people were killed or injured in the two attacks. The violence in Syria, which began in March 2011 as a protest movement similar to those across the Middle East and North Africa, has claimed over 9,000 lives, mostly civilians, and displaced tens of thousands.

Mr. Ban stressed that all parties must immediately cease violence in all its forms and fully cooperate with the work of the United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) as it expands its presence on the ground.

On 21 April, the Security Council authorized the establishment of UNSMIS, an observer mission made up of up to 300 unarmed military observers and deployed for an initial period of 90 days, to monitor the cessation of violence in Syria.

The observers will also monitor and support the full implementation of the six-point peace plan put forward by the Joint Special Envoy of the UN and the League of Arab States for Syria, Kofi Annan.

ON HISTORIC VISIT, BAN PRAISES MYANMAR'S PROGRESS AND URGES FURTHER PARTNERSHIP
New York, Apr 30 2012 12:10PM
During a historic address to Myanmar's parliament, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today emphasized the importance of partnerships – amongst the country's political leadership as well as with the international community – in helping the Asian country advance its process of national reconciliation and democratic transition.

"The dramatic changes sweeping Myanmar have inspired the world, and we know that your ambitions for the future reach higher still," Mr. Ban said in his <"http://www.un.org/apps/news/infocus/sgspeeches/statments_full.asp?statID=1526">remarks to the members of Myanmar's Union Assembly, during an extraordinary session of the parliament. "We know that Myanmar can meet the challenges of reconciliation, democracy and development, but it will take your full determination and your common leadership and partnership."

Earlier this month, Myanmar citizens headed to the polls to vote for representatives of 48 parliamentary seats, with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi winning a position in the lower house of parliament. The by-elections were part of a series of democratic reforms led by President Thein Sein, which began last year.

Addressing the press before leaving UN Headquarters in New York, the Secretary-General had said that there have been "encouraging" political and economic reforms over the past year-and-a-half in the South-east Asian nation, including the recent elections and important steps toward reconciliation. The visit, at the invitation of President Sein and the third for Mr. Ban since he became Secretary-General in 1997, will include a meeting with Ms. Suu Kyi – the UN chief had said he was looking forward to personally congratulating both individuals.

"Elections and open government are the keystones of democracy, but they must be matched with a healthy and vibrant political climate," Mr. Ban emphasized, adding that leaders must look beyond politics and work for the long-term interests of the country as well as for the diverse segments of society including women, young people, the rural poor, and ethnic and religious communities.

In his speech to the parliament – the first ever by an outside guest – the UN chief also outlined a four-point agenda for action to advance national reconciliation and the democratic transition at "this historic moment."

The agenda entails increasing investments in health and education so that the population can quickly see the benefits of the democratic transition in their daily lives, increasing international development assistance, implementing measures to accelerate the reconciliation process such as resettling displaced communities and releasing political prisoners, and fostering an inclusive democratic culture which respects human rights and in particular freedom of speech.

"Priority must be placed on nationally inclusive human rights norms along with the rights of self-expression of ethnic groups," Mr. Ban said. "This will have to be the essential basis for the emergence of an authentic national democratic unity."

Mr. Ban also called on the international community to provide assistance to Myanmar to help it develop its natural resources as well as its manufacturing and service industries.

"Today, Myanmar receives a small percentage of per capita development assistance compared to other neighbouring countries," he said. "The best way for the international community to support reform is to invest in it."

During his three-day visit to the country, which ends tomorrow, the Secretary-General also announced a new partnership between Myanmar and the UN to support the country's first population and housing census in thirty years.

"A census is a crucially important undertaking. The vast amount of information it can capture gives policy-makers the information they need for planning and delivering services, in particular to the poorest and most vulnerable," Mr. Ban said, adding that while there will be a series of challenges to carry out the census, he was confident that these could be overcome with the support of the Government and the international community.

In addition, he noted that UN expertise in various areas, such as rule of law, electoral assistance, anti-corruption and democratic practices, would be made available to Myanmar. "Progress takes partnership," Mr. Ban said. "The United stands ready to help in every way we can."

GLOBAL JOBS CRISIS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR SOME TIME, WARNS UN REPORT

GLOBAL JOBS CRISIS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR SOME TIME, WARNS UN REPORT
New York, Apr 30 2012 11:10AM
The global employment situation is alarming, says a new United Nations <"http://www.ilo.org/global/publications/books/world-of-work/WCMS_179453/lang--en/index.htm">report released today, which also warns that recovery is not expected any time soon.

The <em>World of Work Report 2012: Better Jobs for a Better Economy</em> – published by the UN International Labour Organization (ILO) – says that around 50 million jobs are still missing compared to the situation that existed before the global economic crisis.

It also warns that the global jobs crisis is likely to get worse due to several factors, including the fact that many governments, especially in advanced economies, have shifted their priority to a combination of fiscal austerity and tough labour market reforms.

Such measures are having "devastating" consequences on labour markets in general and job creation in particular, ILO stated in a <"http://www.ilo.org/global/about-the-ilo/press-and-media-centre/news/WCMS_179449/lang--en/index.htm">news release.

"The narrow focus of many Eurozone countries on fiscal austerity is deepening the jobs crisis and could even lead to another recession in Europe," said the Director of the ILO Institute for International Labour Studies and lead author of the report, Raymond Torres.

"Countries that have chosen job-centred macroeconomic policies have achieved better economic and social outcomes," he added. "Many of them have also become more competitive and have weathered the crisis better than those that followed the austerity path. We can look carefully at the experience of those countries and draw lessons."

Another factor leading to a worsening jobs crisis is that many jobseekers in advanced economies are demoralized and are losing skills, something which is affecting their chances of finding a new job. In addition, small companies have limited access to credit, which in turn is depressing investment and preventing employment creation.

"In these countries, especially in Europe, job recovery is not expected before the end of 2016 – unless there is a dramatic shift in policy direction," according to ILO.

Other factors include the fact that, in most advanced economies, many of the new jobs are precarious and there exists the possibility of increased social unrest in many parts of the world. According to the report's Social Unrest Index, 57 out of 106 countries with available information showed a risk of increased social unrest in 2011 compared to 2010. The regions with the largest increases are sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East and North Africa.

The report argues that if a job-friendly policy-mix of taxation and increased expenditure in public investment and social benefits is put in place, approximately two million jobs could be created over the next year in advanced economies.

Among the other findings of the report is that employment rates have only increased in six of the 36 advanced economies since 2007 – Austria, Germany, Israel, Luxembourg, Malta and Poland – and that youth unemployment rates have increased in about 80 per cent of advanced countries and two-thirds of developing countries.

IN INDIA, BAN CALLS FOR GREATER INVESTMENT IN WOMEN AND CHILDREN'S HEALTH

IN INDIA, BAN CALLS FOR GREATER INVESTMENT IN WOMEN AND CHILDREN'S HEALTH
New York, Apr 28 2012 10:10PM
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today called on India to lead the way in improving health services for women and children, stressing that addressing this issue is a crucial investment in the future of the South Asian nation.

"Around the world, some eight million women and children die from preventable causes each year. Almost two million of them are Indian," Mr. Ban said in his remarks at a reception in support of the Every Woman Every Child initiative held in the city of Mumbai. "I am deeply disturbed by these numbers. But I am also fully convinced that we can drive them down."

The Every Woman Every Child initiative is a global effort that was launched in 2010 to mobilize and intensify global action to save the lives of 16 million women and children and improve the lives of millions more.

Mr. Ban told members of the business and creative communities present at the reception that
their participation was crucial to address this issue, and praised efforts already in place such as the Business Leaders Council whose aim is to help India achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the anti-poverty and social development targets that have an achievement deadline of 2015, which include improving women and children's health.

"Too many pregnant women in India have no health services. Too many others have to walk for scores of kilometres just to reach a clinic, and even then, too many mothers and their newborns do not survive. That is why we need to care for every woman and every child." Mr. Ban said.

Mr. Ban was joined at the reception by four other senior UN officials: the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Margaret Chan, the Executive Director of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) Babatunde Osotimehin, Michel Sidibé, the Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), and Geeta Rao Gupta, the Deputy Executive D
irector from the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).

At the reception, Mr. Ban also announced the appointment of Prasada Rao as his new Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in the Asia Pacific region. Mr. Rao has extensive experience in AIDS response. He was previously director of India's National AIDS Control Organization and regional director of UNAIDS for Asia and the Pacific.

During his visit to Mumbai, which finishes today, Mr. Ban met with leading Bollywood and sport stars, many of whom are UN goodwill ambassadors, and thanked them for their work helping to raise awareness on HIV, human rights and poverty in the country. "Many of their films tell stories of the poor. They reach millions of people I never could, and they inspire action against poverty and injustice," he said.

Earlier today, Mr. Ban also met with Prithviraj Chavan, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, with whom he exchanged views on Maharastra's progress on the MDGs and, in particular, on health-related issues and programmes. They a
lso discussed increased partnerships with the private sector for sustainable development.

THE TRANSITION TO A GREEN ECONOMY MUST INCLUDE BETTER SAFETY STANDARDS FOR WORKERS -- UN

THE TRANSITION TO A GREEN ECONOMY MUST INCLUDE BETTER SAFETY STANDARDS FOR WORKERS -- UN
New York, Apr 28 2012 11:10AM
Protecting the safety and health of workers across the world must be part of transitioning into a green economy, the United Nations stressed today, warning that while sustainable jobs may protect the environment and create new employment opportunities, they may also present a number of unforeseen risks for individuals.

"Occupational safety and health is embedded in the goal of decent work and decent work for all is central to the social pillar of sustainable development," said the Director-General of the International Labour Organization, Juan Somavia, in his message marking the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, which is observed annually on 28 April.

According to ILO, two million people die every year from work-related accidents and diseases, 160 million people suffer from work-related diseases, 270 million fatal and non-fatal work-related accidents occur e
very year, and four per cent of the world's annual gross domestic product (GDP) is lost as a consequence of occupational diseases and accidents.

Mr. Somavia emphasized that the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in June will provide countries an opportunity to focus on the promotion of safer workplaces as part of an inclusive approach to development that takes into account the needs of people as well as the planet.

"Experience has already shown that some substances while being more environmentally friendly could be more hazardous to workers' health. Consequently, renewable energies, waste management and recycling, as well as the greening of traditional industries must be approached from the outset with an eye on the occupational safety and health challenges with the aim of eliminating old hazards and risks and preventing new ones from emerging," Mr. Somavia said.

To mark the Day, ILO also launched a report that looks at different green industries from an occupationa
l safety and health perspective and stresses that green jobs must be accompanied by appropriate measures to protect all workers.

"Moving towards a green economy implies setting higher standards for environmental protection while, at the same time, incorporating workers' safety and health as an integral part of the strategy," said the Director of the ILO Programme on Safety and Health at Work and the Environment, Seiji Machida. "Only then will we be contributing to an environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive outcome."

Meanwhile, UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights obligations related to environmentally sound management and disposal of hazardous substances and waste Cali Georgescu warned that millions of workers around the world are still exposed to disease and injury in their places of work, and called on countries to pay attention to promote and create a safe working environment to reduce the number of work-related deaths each year.

"For millions of workers, safety
and protection from disease and injury arising from their employment is not yet a reality," Mr. Georgescu said. "I am particularly concerned about the exposure to these hazardous substances of children and pregnant women, and call for protection measures to be strictly enforced," he added.

UN RIGHTS CHIEF VOICES CONCERN ABOUT SAFETY OF CHINESE ACTIVIST AND HIS FAMILY

UN RIGHTS CHIEF VOICES CONCERN ABOUT SAFETY OF CHINESE ACTIVIST AND HIS FAMILY
New York, Apr 27 2012 7:10PM
The United Nations human rights chief today voiced concern about the welfare of Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng, and the safety of his family members, following his reported escape from house arrest.

Mr. Chen reportedly fled on 22 April from illegal house arrest in Dongshigu town, Linyi county, in Shandong province.

His current whereabouts are unknown, but he has expressed fear of retaliation against his wife Yuan Weijing and children who remained in Shandong, according to a <"http://www.ohchr.org/en/NewsEvents/Pages/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=12094&LangID=E">news release issued by the High Commissioner's office (OHCHR).

"I'm disturbed to hear reports that other family members, including his brother Chen Guangfu and nephew Chen Kegui, have now been detained," said the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay.

OHCHR said that although he was released in September 2010, at the end of a four-year jail term, after being convicted on charges resulting from his work on human rights, Mr. Chen and his family have continued to suffer unlawful detention, ill-treatment and other sanctions.

Ms. Pillay has previously raised concerns with the Chinese authorities over Mr. Chen's case.

She once again urged them "to investigate the treatment of both him and his family, to ensure their physical integrity, and to provide redress for any wrongdoing by local officials."

Are LivingSocial Financials on the Upswing?

According to the latest report, yes!

Amazon.com, LivingSocial’s most well-known, major investors, has filed a quarterly report stating that the daily deal company reported $110 million of revenue in the first quarter of 2012; twice as much revenue as this time last year.

The report also states that LivingSocial had a net income of $156 million last quarter; which is defined as “the recognition of non-operating, non-cash gains on previously held equity positions in companies that LivingSocial acquired during the quarter.”

As reported by the Washington Business Journal several events may have affected LivingSocial’s numbers, such as the shutdown of the acquired Jump on It (Sydney) and Let’s Bonus (Barcelona).  LivingSocial’s first quarter loss was also smaller than last year; it decreased by $11 million, from $103 million last year to $92 million this year. The company had only posted $41 million in revenue last year in the first quarter.
