RECENT NEWS
First-Ever Comprehensive Nationwide PFAS Action Plan. EPA released the Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Action Plan, which responds to extensive public interest and input the agency has received over the past year and represents the first time EPA has built a multi-media, multi-program, national communication and research plan to address an emerging environmental challenge like PFAS. "The PFAS Action Plan is the most comprehensive cross-agency plan to address an emerging chemical of concern ever undertaken by EPA," said EPA's Andrew Wheeler. "For the first time in Agency history, we utilized all of our program offices to construct an all-encompassing plan to help states and local communities address PFAS and protect our nation's drinking water."

WIFIA Water Loan. A $202 million Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act loan will help finance water infrastructure upgrades that will better protect public health and water quality for 1.8 million Baltimore residents. "This WIFIA loan will help Baltimore modernize its wastewater infrastructure, protect human health, and prevent sewage and polluted runoff from entering the Chesapeake Bay," said EPA's Andrew Wheeler. "Through WIFIA, EPA is playing a leading role in President Trump's efforts to upgrade our nation's infrastructure, create jobs, and safeguard public health and the environment."

2018 Annual Environmental Enforcement Results. EPA worked with state and tribal programs to assure compliance with federal environmental laws. "In fiscal year 2018, we continued our focus on expediting site cleanup, deterring noncompliance, and returning facilities to compliance with the law, while respecting the cooperative federalism structure of our nation's environmental laws," said Susan Bodine, Assistant Administrator of EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance.

National Radon Action Month. Test your home for radon, an invisible radioactive gas that causes lung cancer. Testing is the only way to know whether your home contains high radon levels. Overall, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year in the US.

RECENT NEWS
2018 Year in Review. EPA released a report outlining major accomplishments and environmental progress during the Trump Administration. "Over the past year, the Trump Administration has continued to deliver on its promise to provide greater regulatory certainty while protecting public health and the environment," said EPA Acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler. "Over the past year, we finalized 13 major deregulatory actions, deleted all or part of 22 sites from Superfund's National Priorities List — the largest number of deletions in one year since FY 2005 — and continued to safeguard our nation's water supply as well as make historic improvements in air quality. These represent a few of the many accomplishments the Agency achieved under President Trump's direction. America is on a path to a stronger, safer, and cleaner future."

Federal Action Plan to Reduce Childhood Lead Exposure. EPA Acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler, HUD Secretary Ben Carson, and HHS Deputy Secretary Eric Hargan unveiled the Trump Administration's Federal Lead Action Plan to Reduce Childhood Lead Exposures and Associated Health Impacts. "The Federal Lead Action Plan will enhance the Trump Administration's efforts to identify and reduce lead contamination while ensuring children impacted by lead exposure are getting the support and care they need," said EPA Acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler.

New "Waters of the United States" Definition Proposed. EPA and the Department of the Army proposed a clear, understandable, and implementable definition of "waters of the United States" that clarifies federal authority under the Clean Water Act. The straightforward definition would result in significant cost savings, protect the nation's navigable waters, help sustain economic growth, and reduce barriers to business development. "Our proposal would replace the Obama EPA's 2015 definition with one that respects the limits of the Clean Water Act and provides states and landowners the certainty they need to manage their natural resources and grow local economies," said EPA's Andrew Wheeler.

Revisions to New Source Standards Proposed to Advance Clean Energy Technology. EPA proposed to revise the standards for greenhouse gas emissions from new, modified, and reconstructed fossil fuel-fired power plants. "Consistent with President Trump's executive order promoting energy independence, EPA's proposal would rescind excessive burdens on America's energy providers and level the playing field so that new energy technologies can be a part of America's future," said Acting Administrator Wheeler.

RE-Powering America's Land Initiative. EPA announced updates to a mapping tool under its RE-Powering America's Land Initiative, that will help communities, developers, and other stakeholders site renewable energy on current and formerly contaminated lands, landfills, and mine sites. "EPA is not only helping communities across the country clean up contaminated sites, but we are also helping them redevelop those sites for renewable energy production," said EPA's Andrew Wheeler.
