Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will chair the twice-yearly meeting of the Chief Executives Board (CEB) at a session in Nairobi, Kenya, later this week, bringing together the heads of all the agencies, funds and programmes of the United Nations system.
The CEB is the prime instrument for reinforcing the coordinating role of UN intergovernmental bodies on social, economic and related matters. It aligns the strengths of the UN's decentralized system of specialized organizations into a cohesive and functioning whole, ensuring that the UN system delivers on the broad range of commitments made by the international community.
While in Nairobi, Mr. Ban will meet with Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki, Prime Minister Raila Odinga and other officials. He will also visit a geothermal plant and will return to New York over the weekend.
Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro will also attend the Chief Executives Board meeting, after which she and Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Executive Director Michel Sidibé will visit Tanzania for a two-day mission.
The officials will seek to generate political goodwill and support for the General Assembly High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, planned for 8-10 June. They will visit UN-backed public health projects, and meet with Government officials and HIV-affected communities.
