Clean Air where you live. The Clean Air Act is one of the most successful public health programs in American history. In 2010 alone, reductions in fine particle and ozone pollution under the Clean Air Act prevented an estimated 130,000 heart attacks, 1.7 million asthma attacks, and much more. Listen to the ECHO. Use the Enforcement and Compliance History Online database to look up enforcement information where you live or compare enforcement actions by state. In December 2010, EPA turned 40! Here are some key events and activities from years past that happened this month:

Oct 11, 1976 - President Ford signs the Toxic Substances Control Act to curtail risks from chemicals in products and the environment.
Oct 12, 2006 - EPA issues a rule to protect our water systems from contaminated ground water.
Oct 12, 2007 - Thirty EPA employees share the Nobel Peach Prize for their work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Oct 15, 2008 - EPA requires that storage standards for nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain meet the standards for one million years.
Oct 17, 1986 - Congress declares the public has a right to know when toxic chemicals are released.
Oct 18, 1972 - Congress passes the Clean Water Act, to restore and maintain our nation's waters.
Oct 20, 1993 - President Clinton directs the federal government to buy recycled and environmentally-preferable products.
Oct 21, 1971 - President Nixon signs major revisions to pesticide protections to better safeguard Americans.
Oct 30, 2009 - For the first time, EPA requires large emitters of heat-trapping emissions to begin collecting greenhouse gas data
Oct 31, 1991 - President Bush charges all Federal Agencies with promoting and integrating source reduction and recycling.
