The President of the General Assembly, Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, has had discussions with with the Permanent Representative of South Africa, which holds the presidency of the Security Council this month, on several issues, inluding the recent debate on the partnership between the United Nations and the African Union.
During the meeting yesterday, Mr. Al-Nasser and Ambassador Baso Sangqu also discusssed the Security Concil's work on Justice and the Rule of Law, according to a readout of the meeting issued by the spokesperson of the President of the General Assembly.
They exchanged views on a wide range of issues, including the situation in Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and the Middle East, as well as the global economic crisis.
Separately, Mr.Al-Nasser also held talks with Milo? Koterec, the Permanent Representative of the Slovak Republic to the UN, in his capacity as the 68th President of the
UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
Mr. Koterec briefed Mr. Al-Nasser on the priorities on the agenda of ECOSOC this year, with the President of the General Assembly highlighting the key issues on the agenda of the 66th session of the Assembly, which has a special focus on mediation and sustainable development.
They also discusssed the global economic and financial issues and the revitalization of the General Assembly.
Mr. Al-Nasser and Mr. Koterec also exchanged views on strengthening the role of ECOSOC and cooperation between the Assembly and ECOSOC.
