Groupon Says 'In Your Face Wall Street' – Revenues Increased 89%

Groupon numbers are out and I have been all over this one like a wet blanket! There was a massive short covering rally today sending GRPN shares up $1.84 or 18.5%. Share volume traded a crazy 12.8 million shares 522% above normal daily volume. Unless there is something I haven’t seen yet, there should be an excellent follow thru day tomorrow (at least at the opening) on the plus side.

Financial highlights

Revenue surged 89% to $559.3 million in the first quarter 2012, compared with $295.5 million in the first quarter 2011. Gross billings were HUGE. These reflect the gross amounts collected from customers for Groupons sold, excluding any applicable taxes and net of estimated refunds, increased 103% to $1.35 billion in the first quarter 2012, compared with $668.2 million in the first quarter 2011.

Operating income was $39.6 million in the first quarter 2012, which includes an expense of $28.0 million related to non-cash stock-based compensation. This compares with a loss from operations of $117.1 million in the first quarter 2011, which included stock-based expense of $18.9 million.

We are pleased to report a record quarter that demonstrates our progress in unlocking the opportunity in local commerce for merchants and customers worldwide,” said Andrew Mason, CEO of Groupon. Andrew, you should be pleased. Kudos on an excellent quarter.

Pre Earnings Short Covering Rally as Groupon Shares Soar 14% in Early Trading

I have been pounding on the table for several weeks as Groupon shares continued to become more and more oversold that there could be a short covering rally prior to earnings day (May 14th, after the market closes). Well, traders have held out until this morning to realize that perhaps revenues will in fact be in line with expectations.

So while Greece continues to struggle amidst default talks with debt 170% higher than its $301 billion Gross Domestic Product (GPD) GRPN shares have gapped higher at the opening bell ($.30 + 3%) and have yet to look back. Shortly after trading began, CNBC posted a video featuring Daniel Ernst, Hudson Square Research principal, talking about Groupon’s earnings and discussing why he has a “buy” rating on the stock. Groupon shares were trading at voucher prices (50% off the IPO pricing) as of Friday’s , and Mr. Ernst feels that although Facebook is the talk of the town, Groupon may be a ‘better value play’ based on the company’s $1 billion in cash and the fact that it is trading at only 14 times next year’s numbers verses Facebook’s 47 times.

Facebook Co-founder 'Un-likes' America – Renounces Citizenship in Lieu of Paying Potential Taxes

From humble beginnings to a silver spoon

Eduardo Luiz Saverin was born on March 13th, 1982 in São Paulo, Brazil. Eduardo’s father was a Brazilian industrialist working in export, clothing, shipping, and real estate. By 1993, Saverin’s father had become wealthy, and in 1993 it was discovered that his son Eduardo´s name had been placed on a list of kidnapping victims by gangs specializing in kidnapping for ransom. As a result, the family moved to Miami to find a safer place to live.

Saverin attended Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami, and went on to Harvard University, where he was a member of the Phoenix S.K. Club as well as president of the Harvard Investment Association. While an undergraduate at Harvard, Saverin took advantage of Brazil’s lax insider trading regulations and made $300,000 via strategic investments in the oil industry. In 2006, Saverin graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He is a member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity (Eta Psi chapter of Harvard University).
