ENVIRO-TIP OF THE MONTH
Run generators outdoors: generator exhaust is toxic and carbon monoxide (CO) is deadly, can build up quickly, and can linger for hours. Always put generators outside well away from doors, windows, and vents. Find out more about safety and environmentally friendly options during severe winter weather. http://www.epa.gov/naturaldisasters/snow-ice.html

WHAT YOU CAN DO, WHAT YOU CAN USE
Test Your Home For Radon. Radon is the leading cause of non-smoking lung cancer. The only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon is to test your home. http://www.epa.gov/radon
Burnwise This Winter. A correctly used wood-burning stove or other appliance should be smoke-free. If you see or smell smoke, you may have a problem, as smoke can contain particles that are harmful to breathe. http://www.epa.gov/burnwise/bestburn.html
Climate Change video contest. Students age 11-14 are invited to create and submit a brief video about why you care about climate change and what you are doing about it. Be cool! Be creative! Use storytelling or images or shadow puppets or anything. Prizes for the winning entries and the first 100 entries. Entries due March 10. Find out how to create and enter your video: http://epa.gov/climatechange/kids/contest.html
TRI University Challenge. Faculty and students: develop innovative, creative uses for EPA's Toxics Release Inventory data to promote more informed decision-making and action for communities, manufacturers, and government. Look for the announcement of this year's challenge in early February 2014. http://www.epa.gov/tri/university
Stormwater Calculator Update. Now you can use climate models when you calculate stormwater runoff amounts where you live. Property managers, communities, and home owners can enter any U.S. location and select different scenarios to learn how specific green infrastructure changes, including inexpensive changes such as rain barrels or rain gardens, can reduce runoff. http://go.usa.gov/B4SJ
Environmental Merit Nominations (due Feb 21). Nominate New England teachers, citizen activists, business leaders, scientists, public officials and others who have made outstanding contributions on behalf of the region's public health and natural environment. http://go.usa.gov/BZDA
