January is National Radon Action Month. Test your home for radon, an invisible radioactive gas that causes lung cancer. Testing is the only way to know whether your home contains high radon levels.

Volkswagen update - Do you drive a VW, Audi, or Porsche diesel? Learn more about the civil complaint in federal court by EPA and the Department of Justice against Volkswagen organizations. The complaint alleges 600,000 diesel vehicles were sold with illegal devices designed to circumvent air pollution emissions standards, and that VW imported into the US vehicles that are designed differently than what they certified to EPA.

Burn Better: Burnwise - Whether you're using a woodstove, pellet stove, or fireplace, smoke from your chimney means your fire isn't burning as well as it could. Burn only dry, seasoned wood, and start a fire with dry kindling. Never burn plastic, or painted or treated wood which releases toxic chemicals. Get more tips for safe, efficient (and enjoyable!) wood burning.

PEYA Nominations (due Jan 31) - Apply or encourage a student you know to apply for the President's Environmental Youth Award. Applicants from all states and territories are eligible to compete for a regional certificate of special recognition and a national. The nomination deadline has been extended to January 31.
