ENVIRO-TIP OF THE MONTH

January is National Radon Action Month. Test your home for radon, an invisible radioactive gas that causes lung cancer. Testing is the only way to know whether your home contains high radon levels.

RECENT NEWS

Next Steps for the Proposed Clean Power Plan Repeal - The Agency will solicit public input as it considers the next regulatory steps to limit greenhouse gas emissions from existing power plants. "Today's move ensures adequate and early opportunity for public comment from all stakeholders about next steps the Agency might take to limit greenhouse gases from stationary sources, in a way that properly stays within the law, and the bounds of the authority provided to EPA by Congress." -- EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt. Comments are due 60 days after publication in the Federal Register.

EPA Cross-Agency Effort to Address PFAS - The Agency launched a cross-agency effort to address Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) including PFOA, PFOS, and GenX. These substances are a diverse group of compounds resistant to heat, water, and oil that are persistent in the environment and resist degradation. "Protecting public health is EPA's highest priority and through these efforts we are taking the lead to ensure that communities across the country have the tools they need to address these chemicals." -- Administrator Scott Pruitt.

WHAT YOU CAN DO, WHAT YOU CAN USE

After the holidays:

Burnwise to Burn Better - Whether you're using a woodstove, pellet stove, or fireplace, smoke from your chimney means your fire isn't burning as well as it could. Burn only dry, seasoned wood and start a fire with dry kindling. Never burn plastic, or painted or treated wood which releases toxic chemicals. Get more tips for safe, efficient (and enjoyable!) wood burning.
