This helps keep lead, cadmium, and other substances out of the landfill. Find eCycling centers near you. November 15 is America Recycles Day. http://www.epa.gov/ecycling   -----------------------------------------------------   WHAT YOU CAN DO, WHAT YOU CAN USE   Comment on the Clean Power Plan by December 1. EPA is providing additional information and ideas for public comment about the Clean Power Plan, first announced in June. We want to be sure that everyone is aware of the issues and ideas that have been consistently raised by a diverse group of stakeholders, so that you have the opportunity to consider them as you write your comments. We released the national plan that outlines how we'll cut carbon pollution, help communities plan for the effects of climate change, and lead international efforts to reduce emissions. For example, we're providing a stormwater calculator to help communities estimate and plan for the amount of stormwater runoff that they’ll have to manage now and in the future. http://go.usa.gov/7sST   Holiday season:   (food waste item now a bullet) Reduce food waste. As we enter the holiday season remember to feed people – not landfills.  1 in 6 Americans lacks food security. Donate your extra food to your local food bank and prevent waste by being smart about what you buy, how you prep, and how you store your food.  And, if you do end up with some scraps, compost them. http://www2.epa.gov/recycle/reducing-wasted-food-basics  More house and garden tips. Learn more things you can do to reduce waste and protect the environment this fall and during the holidays. http://www.epa.gov/osw/wycd/funfacts/fall.htm   News for schools: School Bus Replacement Rebates (apply by Nov 17). Owners of public or private school bus fleets are eligible to apply for funding to replace school buses with diesel engines model years of 2006 or older. Replacing older buses will help reduce diesel emissions and improve air quality for Americans. http://go.usa.gov/G85H  Improving Indoor Air at School. The new "Energy Savings Plus Health" guidance offers practical guidance to help school districts protect school indoor air quality and increase energy efficiency during school renovations. Nearly 55 million elementary and secondary students attend school, but about 25 million are not yet protected by indoor air quality management programs. http://go.usa.gov/G85V   Reduce pesticide "drift." Each year, millions of pounds of pesticides are lost to drift -- blown away from fields to other areas. Communities may apply for technical assistance to implement smart growth development approaches, to increase resilience to natural disasters and strengthen the economy while protecting your health and the environment. We’ve updated ChemView, our one-stop database of chemicals regulated under the Toxic Substances Control Act, with more chemical information and improved usability. We’re looking for nominations for the 2015 Gulf Guardian Awards. These awards recognize businesses, community groups, individuals, or organizations taking extraordinary steps to keep the Gulf healthy, beautiful, and productive.
