Daily Deal News for August 15th, 2011
Gilt and GiltCity Offline
It appears that the gilt.com and giltcity.com sites are currently down. Gilt Groupe says it is currently unavailable due to maintenance and asks visitors to return in one hour. Reason for alarm? Probably not. My favorite (non-daily deals) shopping sites often go down for maintenance, though usually during non-peak hours. So the timing does seem a little odd. For consumers it’s nothing more than an inconvenience but if you’re a merchant you may view it as lost revenues.

Alberta Government Finds Groupon in Violation
This is getting to be old news but you can now add Alberta Canada to the growing list of local governments that are putting Groupon’s voucher expiration dates under the microscope. In this case the Alberta Government says that Groupon is in violation of the province’s gift card laws.

That’s in violation of our gift card regulation,” said Mike Berezowsky from Service Alberta. “The gift card regulation was put in place in 2008 and that says that gift cards or certificates or vouchers with a specific dollar amount cannot expire.

Groupon does have a policy in place that allows consumers to still redeem expired vouchers at the purchase price but not for the face value. Berezowsky says that according to Alberta law consumers are entitled to the full face value of the voucher.

Fab.com Offers a Daily Deal on a House
Fab.com, the slightly odd daily deals site for all things funky, is offering a little cabana-type house from Puck and Blossom for $21,500 down from the original retail price of $26,875 and the shipping is free. The total living space is 12’x16’ with double sliders and a roofed porch. This would be great for pool side, a small office, guest space or just a place to get away. According to the description, the structure takes two people and five hours to put together.

But wait, is this really a bargain? I think not when you can go to your local home building center and pick up a 12’x24’ storage shed for around $3700, swap out the doors with a pair of sliders for under $500 and have room for a tiny bath and kitchenette, all for probably less than half of the Fab.com deal. Of course it won’t be a Puck and Blossom (whoever they are) so you’ll lose the snob appeal, but since you’re going to have to have at least a modicum of familiarity with hand tools to put this thing together anyway, why not save some money and gain some substantial floor space? And remember what Red Green always said (with duct tape in hand) “If women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.
