EPA RESPONSE TO CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)

EPA's Coronavirus website provides key EPA resources and links to additional information about the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Read the most up-to-date information about EPA actions, disinfectants, drinking water and waste water, and other resources.

EPA's new List N Tool makes it easier to find disinfectants to use against coronavirus. You can use this new online tool to search by where you want to use the disinfectant (e.g., home, business, etc.), surface type to disinfect, EPA registration number, and other important factors.

EPA Emphasizes the Need to Continue Cleaning and Disinfection Practices. EPA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and federal, state, tribal, and local partners to move forward toward Opening up America Again. "As we reopen areas around the country, EPA encourages Americans to continue cleaning and disinfecting based on the guidelines we recently released in partnership with CDC," said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. "Proper cleaning followed by disinfection using products on EPA's approved list continues to be an effective way to help reduce the spread of the disease."

ENVIRO-TIP OF THE MONTH

Don't recycle PPE. Keep gloves, masks, other personal protective equipment (PPE) out of recycling bins. Do not litter these items either and instead bag these items and dispose of them properly. Be sure these used items are kept away from children and pets, too.

RECENT NEWS

155 grants selected for communities to receive over $65 million total for Brownfield assessments and cleanups across the nation. EPA announced 155 grants through the agency's Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund, and Cleanup Grant Programs. "Grants awarded by EPA's Brownfield Program provide communities and tribes across the country with an opportunity to transform contaminated sites into community assets," said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. "Under President Trump's leadership, EPA has delivered approximately $287 million in Brownfield grants directly to communities and nonprofits for cleanup and redevelopment, job creation, and economic development through the award of over 948 grants." These EPA grant programs support community revitalization in under-served and economically disadvantaged communities.

Assistance for Community Revitalization, Local Food Economy. EPA and USDA announced assistance for 16 communities to boost economic opportunities for farmers, while promoting clean air, safe water, open space, and healthy food choices. "The Trump Administration is committed to helping communities develop and strengthen their local food economy by investing in opportunity zones," said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. The assistance is provided through the Local Foods, Local Places program, a federal initiative that helps communities reinvest in existing neighborhoods and improve quality of life through the sustainable development of their local food economy.

EPA Honors Small Business Champions. EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler announced the winners of the 30th Annual Administrator's Small Business Program Awards for outstanding small business championship in Fiscal Year 2019. The 20 award recipients include businesses, state and local entities, and EPA employees who demonstrated exemplary leadership in supporting the agency's small business programs. "In this time of unprecedented disruption for our nation's small businesses, it is more important than ever to recognize our outstanding small business support." said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. "I am proud of our effective staff efforts that will ensure our partnership with small businesses remains strong and vibrant."

WHAT YOU CAN DO, WHAT YOU CAN USE

Recycle and properly dispose of personal protective equipment. EPA is encouraging all Americans to recycle materials from their households and properly dispose of personal protective equipment (PPE), especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recycling isn't just good for the planet by reducing the amount of waste going to landfills and saving energy, it also supports American manufacturing. Currently, businesses that normally recycle large amounts of paper and cardboard are not able to do that due to the impacts from the coronavirus health crisis. Because of this, household recycling is more essential than ever. EPA encourages households to do their part – recycle more and recycle correctly so the right materials are available for U.S. manufacturers.

Stay Sun-Safe this Summer: Check the UV Index and Protect Your Health. EPA with the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recognizes the Friday before Memorial Day as "Don't Fry Day". This is to encourage Americans to take a few simple steps to protect their skin and eye health from overexposure to the sun. One of these steps is to download and use EPA's free Ultraviolet (UV) Index app on a mobile device. Overexposure to the sun's UV rays is harmful and can lead to cataracts or skin cancer, the most common cancer in the United States.

Harmful Algal Blooms:

  • Certain environmental conditions in water bodies can intensify algae growth, causing algal blooms. Blooms that produce toxins with the potential to harm human health or aquatic ecosystems are referred to as harmful algal blooms, or HABs. Such blooms can harm people, animals, aquatic ecosystems, drinking water supplies, and other problems. Check out EPA's web site about harmful algal blooms (HABs) caused by cyanobacteria and ways EPA, states, territories, and tribes are working to address them.

  • Iowa, Montana high school students recognized for "See a Bloom, Give It Room" High School Video Challenge. The challenge solicited videos from high school students (grades 9-12) that promoted public awareness of harmful algal blooms (HABs) through creative filmmaking. Students were asked to create short public safety videos that explain how to spot harmful algal blooms and tips on how people and their pets can be safe around them.
