New York, May 6 2010 10:10AM
The top United Nations envoy to Afghanistan today condemned deadly attacks on Government buildings in the country's southwest, which he characterized as a "despicable display of violence."

According to reports, Gul Makai Wakili, a member of the Provincial Council, along with at least three police officers, were killed in the attacks repelled by Afghan National Police in Zaranj, the capital of Nimroz province. Four civilians and 7 police officers were injured in the incident.

"Ms. Gul Makai Wakili, who was also a poet, was committed to working for women's rights in Zaranj, respected by her constituents and had a nationwide vision for the future of Afghanistan," Staffan de Mistura, the Secretary-General's Special Representative, said in a statement.

"The thoughts of the entire United Nations family in Afghanistan go out to her family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time – and also to those of the police officers killed or injured in the attack," he added.
