Indonesia's Foreign Minister called today for enhanced cooperation between the United Nations and regional organizations, especially the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (<"http://www.aseansec.org/">ASEAN).

"Many global problems become more manageable if there are simultaneous efforts to address them at the regional level," Marty Natalegawa <"http://gadebate.un.org/Portals/1/statements/634212875285000000ID_en.pdf">told the General Assembly's annual high-level debate.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is scheduled to attend a UN-ASEAN summit set to take place next month in Hanoi, Viet Nam.

That body and other nations in the larger Asia-Pacific region, Mr. Natalegawa said today, "are building a regional architecture that will bring about and sustain dynamic equilibrium in the region."

ASEAN, he said, "will, of course, be the driving force in the building of this architecture."

Though democracy is a global concern, Indonesia is also "vigorously" promoting democratic values in the region through ASEAN and beyond, the Minister noted.

Since democracy is dynamic process, his country continues to "fine-tune" its political institutions so "that they become more effective in serving the people," calling on the UN to also carry out continuous reform to more effectively serve all nations, both developed and developing.
