New York, Jul 22 2011 5:10PM
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon voiced his shock after a deadly explosion struck the centre of the Norwegian capital, Oslo, earlier today, and a gunman shot dead participants at a nearby youth camp.

Media reports indicate that at least seven people died as a result of the massive bomb blast, which occurred mid-afternoon local time near a series of key Government buildings in Oslo.

In Utoya, outside Oslo, a gunman killed at least four people at a youth camp connected to the country's ruling Labour Party, with media reports indicating that the attacks are linked.

In a <"http://www.un.org/apps/sg/sgstats.asp?nid=5430">statement issued by his spokesperson, Mr. Ban said he "condemns this violence and expresses his condolences to the Government of Norway and the families of the victims. The United Nations stands together with the people of Norway at this terrible moment."
