The completion of the withdrawal of United States troops from Iraq opens a new chapter in the country's recent history, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today, adding that he strongly believes it is an opportunity for Iraqi leaders to demonstrate their capacity to steer the nation towards a better future.

In a <"http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2011/sgsm14033.doc.htm">statement>/A> issued by his spokesperson, Mr. Ban said he is closely following the political situation in Iraq and urged the country's leadership to engage in inclusive and constructive dialogue to resolve their differences, and build on the achievements that have been made so far in laying the ground for a democratic State.

"Iraqi leaders owe it to the people of Iraq who elected them to work together in spirit of partnership and national unity to address the pressing challenges facing the country," said the statement.

The Secretary-General said the United Nations is strongly committed, through the work of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), to assist the people and Government of Iraq in their endeavour to build a peaceful, democratic and prosperous country.
