UN ENVOY IN DARFUR EXTENDS CONDOLENCES FOLLOWING FATAL PLANE CRASH IN SUDAN

The head of the United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur, known by the acronym UNAMID, today expressed her sadness over a fatal airplane crash which killed many people, including a Sudanese Government minister.

"The Acting Joint Special Representative of UNAMID, Aichatou Mindaoudou, is saddened by today's plane crash, which took the life of an entire delegation chaired by the Minister of Guidance and Endowments, Ghazi Al-Saddiq, as well as the crew," a UNAMID news release stated.

According to media reports, 32 people, including the Minister and other Government officials, died when a plane taking them to an Islamic festival crashed near the town of Talodi, in the southern state of South Kordofan.

"On behalf of UNAMID, Ms. Mindaoudou offers her deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of all victims and to the Government and the
people of Sudan," the news release added.
