RECENT NEWS
EPA Finalizes Affordable Clean Energy Rule, Ensuring Reliable, Diversified Energy Resources while Protecting our Environment. The Affordable Clean Energy (ACE) rule replaces the prior administration's overreaching Clean Power Plan with a rule that restores the rule of law and empowers states to continue to reduce emissions while providing affordable and reliable energy for all Americans. Today's actions are the culmination of a review of the CPP, which was done in response to President Trump's Executive Order 13873 - Promoting Energy Independence and Economic Growth. "Today, we are delivering on one of President Trump's core priorities: ensuring the American public has access to affordable, reliable energy in a manner that continues our nation's environmental progress," said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler.

New lead dust standards to protect children's health. EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson announced new, tighter standards for lead in dust on floors and window sills to protect children from the harmful effects of lead exposure. "EPA is delivering on our commitment in the Trump Administration's Federal Lead Action Plan to take important steps to reduce childhood lead exposure," said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. To protect children's health and to continue making progress on this important issue, EPA is lowering the dust-lead hazard standards from 40 micrograms of lead per square foot (µg/ft2) to 10 µg/ft2 on floors; and from 250 µg/ft2 to 100 µg/ft2 on window sills. The more protective dust-lead hazard standards will apply to inspections, risk assessments, and abatement activities in pre-1978 housing and certain schools, child care facilities, and hospitals across the country.

Over $73 Million for Brownfields Cleanups:
- 149 Communities to Receive $64.6 Million for Brownfields Cleanups. These funds, through the Multipurpose, Assessment, and Cleanup grant program, will aid under-served and economically disadvantaged communities in Opportunity Zones and other parts of the country in assessing and cleaning up abandoned industrial and commercial properties. "These grants fulfill several of President Trump's top priorities simultaneously: helping communities in need transform contaminated sites into community assets that not only create jobs and jumpstart economic development but also improve public health and the environment," said EPA's Andrew Wheeler.

- $9.3 Million in Supplemental Funds to Clean Up and Reuse Brownfield Sites. The supplemental funds are going to 24 grantees that have demonstrated success in using their Revolving Loan Funds to clean up and redevelop brownfield sites. The funds will be used to continue their progress in reusing vacant and abandoned properties and turning them into community assets. "This Brownfields supplemental funding will provide additional resources to 24 communities with a proven track record of success so they can continue their progress revitalizing their local economy and improving the health and wellbeing of their community," said Administrator Wheeler.

EPA Prepares the Public for the 2019 Hurricane Season by Focusing on Waste Mitigation. The Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1 and is a reminder to the public to prepare now for natural disasters to aid recovery efforts. "EPA's response to natural disasters is one of the many ways that we protect human health and the environment," said Administrator Wheeler. "We want to inform the public of how they can prepare for hurricane season and help protect their communities, the environment, and first responders by mitigating hazardous waste and securing potential harmful debris before storms strike."

Congratulations to Dr. Rebecca Dodder, EPA scientist! We're especially pleased to note that EPA's own Dr. Rebecca Dodder is among the 2018 recipients of the prestigious Arthur S. Flemming Award. Dr. Dodder pioneered new ways to examine the environmental and health impacts of energy use. She also developed a board game, "Generate," to help educate people about the environmental effects of energy production, and used by thousands of students and teachers worldwide. The Arthur S. Flemming award goes back over six decades and recognizes outstanding men and women in the federal government.
