The world's most pressing challenges, from climate change to disarmament to the fight against poverty, can only be solved when countries unite through the United Nations, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will tell global leaders on Wednesday morning when they gather for the annual opening in New York of the high-level segment at the General Assembly.
Mr. Ban is expected to stress the importance of renewed multilateralism when he addresses the 192-member Assembly's General Debate at UN Headquarters.
In a wide-ranging speech before dozens of heads of State or government, Mr. Ban intends to spotlight the need for joint action on issues ranging from climate change and disarmament to ensuring that the world's poorest people are not left behind by efforts to deal with the economic crisis.
He is also likely to discuss many other issues, including efforts to combat sexual violence, the situation in Darfur, the Middle East conflict, Myanmar, Afghanistan and UN peacekeeping operations around the world.
