What is the next big automotive technology coming down the pike? A: GDI, or gasoline direct injection. You'll get sick of hearing about it, it'll be so common. Pricey, but the payoff is better mpg, better power, lower emissions. It'll keep gasoline engines viable until electrics and diesels can be made truly competitive in price. Direct injection uses very high pressure fuel injection, and that can be noisy, so one challenge is to keep it quiet. It shoots fuel into the cylinder directly, not into an area behind the intake valve where it waits until the valve opens. More precise, cleaner-burning. Read the latest Test Drive chat
