The President of the General Assembly has begun the second leg of a 15-day, four-nation trip to the Middle East after earlier holding talks with top Syrian officials that focused on the role of the United Nations in the region.
Dr. Treki today arrived in Yemen for several days of talks with senior officials in that country's Government. He will then travel to Kuwait and Bahrain before wrapping up his trip next Wednesday.
On Monday, he visited Damascus for discussions with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that covered the role of the UN in the Middle East and the need for reconciliation among the Palestinians.
The two men also exchanged views on disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons in the light of the upcoming international meetings on the two issues – the General Assembly's thematic debate on 19 April, and the review conference of the Non-Proliferation Treaty on 3 May.
Dr. Treki extended an invitation to Mr. Assad to attend the Millennium Development Goals (<"http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/">MDG) summit in New York in September.
The President of the General Assembly also had talks with Syria's Vice-President Farouk al-Sharaa on regional matters and Dr. Treki's initiatives on thematic debates on disarmament, dialogue among civilizations and peacekeeping.
Dr. Treki invited Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem to attend the upcoming thematic debate on the Middle East. Mr. Muallem commended Dr. Treki for his role in the revitalization of the General Assembly and reiterated the position of the League of Arab States on the expansion of the Security Council.
