UGANDA ON COURSE TO MEET ALL BUT TWO DEVELOPMENT TARGETS, LEADER TELLS UN

Uganda's leader told the General Assembly today that his country is on track to achieve most of the eight Millennium Development Goals (<"http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/">MDGs) and is stepping up efforts in the two areas it is lagging behind in – maternal and child health.

President Yoweri Museveni <"http://gadebate.un.org/View/SpeechView/tabid/85/smid/411/ArticleID/165/reftab/227/t/Uganda/Default.aspx">said that the African Great Lakes nation has developed a national roadmap to speed up reduction of maternal and child mortality and morbidity. The strategy focuses on effective antenatal care and skilled attendance at birth, among others.

"In Uganda, we have never believed in donor-anchored MDGs as a sustainable solution," he told the Assembly's annual high-level segment as it entered its second day. "MDGs should be anchored on the growth and transformation of the economies of the target countries."

The President said that he is glad that the "cloud of Afro-pessimism" is dispersing, noting the growing recognition of Africa's promise by the West.

The continent's economies, he pointed out, have become "roaring lions," despite their under-developed infrastructure.

Should infrastructure bottlenecks – including electricity and transport – are resolved, Africa's potential is limitless, Mr. Museveni said.

"If our partners could concentrate on assisting infrastructure development, Africa's transition would be that much faster," he said, welcoming aid in relevant sectors.
