In December 2010, EPA turned 40! Here are some key events and activities from years past that happened this month:
Jan 1, 1982 - President Reagan signs The Nuclear Waste Policy Act, allowing for the safe storage and disposal of radioactive waste.
Jan 6, 2010 - EPA proposes the strongest health standards to-date for smog.
Jan 11, 2002 - President Bush signs an act to reclaim and restore
Jan 13, 1971 - Congress restricts the use of lead-based paint in homes and toys in the Lead-Based Paint Poisoning Prevention Act.
Jan 21, 1993 - Carol M. Browner begins the longest term of any EPA Administrator, eight years.
Jan 23, 2009 - Lisa P. Jackson is sworn in as EPA's first African American Administrator.
Jan 30, 2001 - Christine Todd Whitman becomes EPA Administrator and introduces the Clear Skies Initiative.
