Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned the terror attack that occurred yesterday on a border checkpoint in the Sinai Peninsula, killing 16 Egyptian police officers.

There were also a number of injuries resulting from the attack, which took place during the breaking of the Ramadan fast, said a <"http://www.un.org/sg/statements/index.asp?nid=6230">statement issued by Mr. Ban's spokesperson. It added that the attack was followed by the penetration of the border into Israel, putting Israeli citizens potentially at risk.

"Such attacks are totally unacceptable," said the statement. "The Secretary-General hopes that the perpetrators will be swiftly identified and brought to justice."

Mr. Ban expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
