President of the General Assembly Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser <"http://www.un.org/en/ga/president/66/news/PRStatements/ps290212.shtml">met today in London with two top officials from the United Kingdom to discuss recent developments in the country as well as the situation in Syria and Somalia.
Mr. Al-Nasser first held talks with the Minister of State at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Jeremy Browne, with whom he discussed the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), Syria, and the Middle East peace process.
Mr. Al-Nasser later held separate discussions with Henry Bellingham, Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The two men exchanged views on Somalia, focusing on last week's conference which was organized and hosted by the British Government.
During the conference, representatives of various Member States discussed ways to strengthen international efforts to tackle some of the country's most pressing issues, with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon calling for steps to improve security, advance the political process and step up assistance for recovery, reconstruction and development.
The two officials also discussed matters concerning the fifth committee of the General Assembly, administrative and budgetary issues focusing on the approval of the current UN regular budget, and preparations for the upcoming resumed session in May that will consider peacekeeping budgets.
In addition, they discussed the issues of global governance and the High Level meeting that Mr. Al-Nasser is convening in May regarding the state of the world economy.
