The top United Nations envoy in Iraq has strongly condemned the series of deadly attacks carried out today across the country and called on authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The wave of bombings and shootings in various cities and towns has resulted in at least 55 deaths and hundreds of injuries, according to media reports, which added that the violence targeted predominantly Shia areas.

"The continuing violent attacks on Iraqis are totally unacceptable and have to stop. I call on the Iraqi authorities to fully investigate these outrageous acts of violence and bring the criminals to justice," Martin Kobler, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq, said in a statement.

He extended his condolences to the families of those who were killed and his wishes for the speedy recovery of those who were injured.

"Today's despicable attacks are an assault on human life and dignity," added Mr. Kobler, who is head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). "They are meant to hinder the achievement of national unity and stability."

He urged Iraqis to come together in mutual respect to consider peaceful alternatives to violence.

Today's bombings are the latest in a series of deadly attacks across Iraq in recent weeks, and have sparked concerns about renewed political and sectarian tensions.
