2010 Acura ZDX hits right notes despite styling compromises
By James R. Healey, USA TODAY
PHOTOS/AUDIO: Acura ZDX with Healey's comments
QUESTIONS? Ask them now for Healey's chat, 2 p.m. ET
Today's question:
Q: I really like the Audi A3 but it seems that every reviewer and car mag says save your money and buy a VW Golf. Does this theory hold true down the line? Buy a Jetta over an A4, Passat over an A6?
A: No. There's enough difference in Audi's execution that it's easy to see why a person might spend extra on the Audi. And the powertrains aren't always identical. Audis are just class-on-a-stick, and while VWs are pretty premium, they're just not in the same league. But it's also easy to see why a relatively budget-minded person would eschew Audis for VWs. Easy to argue both sides of that one. Check the JDPower and Consumer Reports scores on the specific models you're weighing.

The quick pace in 'Wet,' from Bethesda Softworks for the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3, keeps you on your toes while mastering gun-for-hire Rubi Malone's three main skills: acrobatics, gunplay and swordsmanship.

'Wet' drips style, but lacks substance

While chasing a thug through Chinatown's dingy back alleys, you run along brick walls, swing from balcony ledges and even slide down a ladder in slow-motion upside-down, no less while pegging off henchmen with your pistols. After taking down a few more bad guys with a razor-thin sword, you take a quick break from the pursuit to swig some whiskey, toss the bottle in the air and shoot a bullet through it. Read more

Monthly Horoscopes – October Horoscopes 2009
September 24, 2009 at 12:59 pm

October Horoscopes are available now

Monthly Horoscopes – October Horoscopes 2009

ARIES Horoscopes (March 20 – April 19) One of the basic rules of astrology is that when the personal planets are opposing you like they are this month you can either tap your foot or shake your leg in the waiting room. Or you can take a deep breath and go for it if you have carefully constructed a better mousetrap. No matter what is your condition, an Aries never exhibits patience or waits their turn. The world has grown tired of all the pie in the sky shenanigans that idea men like you have thrown at them with resentments to follow. If you have to make your move, wait until the first of October when Mercury is out of retrograde.

Interview: Ken Burns
September 24, 2009 at 2:31 pm

On his latest PBS documentary, The National Parks
After watching The National Parks: America's Best Idea , it would be easy to conclude that it all could have been said a lot faster. Ken Burns disagrees — but he's not just being defensive.

Listen: Clif Garboden's complete interview with Ken Burns (mp3).

Holy landscape! Ken Burns worships America's spiritual resource. By Clif Garboden.

Slideshow: Images from The National Parks: America's Best Idea.

After watching The National Parks: America's Best Idea, it would be easy to conclude that it all could have been said a lot faster. Ken Burns disagrees — but he's not just being defensive.

The crux of the argument lies in our divergent relationships to the film — creator's versus the critic's. Where the filmmaker sees the successful execution of an unconventional approach to telling a complex story, a critic projects himself into the response (and attention span) of a casual viewer, and thereby judges anything on TV by the standards of convention.

I quizzed Burns about his pacing, storytelling, techniques, and goals during a pre-broadcast promotional visit to WGBH, and got a lesson in non-traditional documentary filmmaking.

It's a long film. What message do you want people to take away from it?
For us, intention is to tell a good story. At the same time, we know very well that art has the possibility to galvanize action, and we would hope that it would just very simply drive people to the parks.

About three years after the Civil War series, I was walking across the lawn of the visitors center at Gettysburg with the superintendent, and he stooped over and picked up a popsicle wrapper and waved it in my face. He said, "It's all your fault!" His attendance had gone up 200 to 300 percent and stayed there.

We want every superintendent "angry" at us.

When you did The War, you had people on your case saying you have to cover Native-Americans . . . you have to include whatever. Was that a factor here, in terms of including certain parks or states?
In no way do we feel obligated in any film. What we were trying to do was tell the story of an idea which begins with spectacular natural scenery, evolves into saving archaeological sites, and then goes in to land carved out of private land — Acadia — into complicated habitats like the Everglades, transforming into saving historical sites like the battlefields of the Civil War, and then finally not only ecological and environmental places but also places of shame — Manzanar, where Japanese American were interned, as is Shanksville Pennsylvania where United flight 93 went down.

Terri Lyne Carrington gives the BeanTown Jazz Fest the blues
Terri Lyne Carrington gives the BeanTown Jazz Fest the blues

0909_terri_main
HOMEGIRL: Carrington is a Boston-area native who teaches at Berklee and is . . . connected.
It makes sense that when the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival — which concludes with two big concerts this weekend — looked close to home for an artistic director, it would turn to Terri Lyne Carrington. Not only does the 44-year-old Medford native have home-town cred, but her career has been broad and far-reaching, both in jazz and in pop, as a player, a composer, and a producer. In short, she's connected. A child prodigy who studied with Boston drum legend Alan Dawson, she received a scholarship to Berklee at age 11. She did stints as a TV band drummer (Arsenio Hall in the '80s, Quincy Jones's Vibe in the '90s), and she's been a regular in Herbie Hancock's bands since 1997. Her own More To Say . . .(Real Life Story: Next Gen) (E1 Entertainment) came out earlier this year. Four years ago, she started teaching at Berklee, and in 2006 she moved back to town from LA — after 22 years away.

Berklee had jobbed out production since taking over the nine-year-old festival — which was started by South End impresario and restaurant owner Darryl Settles ? in 2007. When I get her on the phone at her Stoneham home (she's in the midst of moving to Woburn "as we speak"), she says Berklee vice-president of academic affairs Larry Simpson talked with her about getting a Berklee faculty member with local roots to take over. "And it might be cheaper for them too!" she speculates with a laugh.

This year's festival officially began last week with the Regattabar appearances of Ahmad Jamal, but the signature events take place this Friday with the "Kickin' the Blues" concert at the Berklee Performance Center and then on Saturday with the event that started it all: an afternoon-long free South End block party at Columbus Ave between Mass Ave and Burke Street, with music on three stages.

"Basically I wanted to have a blues-themed festival," says Carrington. "I guess I felt that so many of us have the blues these days," she laughs, "with the economy and things going on in the world. But I like the blues, and I feel it's actually uplifting. I wanted a feel-good kind of festival musically, and not get too heavy."

GEORGIA, ADDRESSING UN DEBATE, SPEAKS OUT AGAINST 'NEW DIVIDING LINE'

GEORGIA, ADDRESSING UN DEBATE, SPEAKS OUT AGAINST 'NEW DIVIDING LINE'
New York, Sep 24 2009 11:10PM
Georgia is "a nation with a deep wound running through her" since fighting broke out last year with South Ossetian and Abkhaz separatists and their Russian allies, its President told the General Assembly tonight, vowing that he and his people will never accept "a new dividing line in our country."

Mikheil Saakashvili <"http://www.un.org/ga/64/generaldebate/pdf/GE_en.pdf">told the Assembly's General Debate at UN Headquarters in New York that "the new wall that cuts across our territory has transformed Georgia to an idea and a test. An idea of freedom and independence, and a test for the world. A test the world must not fail."

Mr. Saakashvili said that since the deadly fighting erupted in August 2008 the "wall cuts off one-fifth of our territory." He pledged that his country would "tear down this new wall peacefully – with the power of our ideas and the strength of our convictions."

South Ossetia and Abkhazia have each declared their independence from Georgia, and Russia and some other countries have recognized those declarations. But Mr. Saakashvili said he wanted to thank "all those nations across the globe that resisted illegality and pressure by standing firm in their non-recognition of those territories of Georgia now occupied by a foreign force."

He also voiced gratitude for the financial support provided for Georgia's reconstruction and for assistance to the population of internally displaced persons (IDPs) that swelled after the conflict.

"We are resolutely committed to our vision of a sovereign and unified Georgia," Mr. Saakashvili stressed. "Together, with all of Georgia's diverse ethnic groups and religions we will prevail over this illegal occupation and reverse this ethnic cleansing."

Focusing on Abkhazia, he said that "Abkhazia today has been emptied of more than three quarters of its population. Gardens and hotels, theatres and restaurants have been replaced by military bases and graveyards. It will take time, but Abkhazia will once again be what it was: the most wonderful part of Georgia."

SENEGAL SEEKS UN BACKING FOR 'GREAT GREEN WALL' ACROSS AFRICA
September 24, 2009 at 10:51 pm

SENEGAL SEEKS UN BACKING FOR 'GREAT GREEN WALL' ACROSS AFRICA
New York, Sep 24 2009 10:10PM
Senegal today called for United Nations support for the "Great Green Wall" project in which African countries have agreed to plant trees in a band across the breadth of the continent to try to lessen the effects of desertification.

President Abdoulaye Wade told the General Assembly's annual high-level debate that he wishes the UN will endorse the project, "which contributes to the protection of the environment," help in the battle against climate change and would mobilize thousands of people.

The Great Green Wall will stretch about 7,000 kilometres from Dakar, the Senegalese capital, to Djibouti in the Horn of Africa, and will be about 15 kilometres wide as it traverses the continent.

Senegal has responsibility for coordinating the project, and Mr. Wade said today that his country has already planted about 525 kilometres of trees, with Mali and Chad to begin work on their sections soon.

"With the help of experts from around the world, we could select plants adapted to the relatively arid climatic conditions of the Sahelo-Saharan zone," he said. "At the same time, we have decided to develop rainwater ponds along the course of this wall."

Mr. Wade stressed that Africa must play its part in wider global efforts to renew and protect the environment, saying the wall project is part of those efforts.

He also said the wall project could lead to the mobilization of many young Africans in the service of a cause that boosts the environment and peace.

EUROPEAN NATIONS HIGHLIGHT NEED FOR SECURITY COUNCIL REFORM
September 24, 2009 at 10:40 pm

EUROPEAN NATIONS HIGHLIGHT NEED FOR SECURITY COUNCIL REFORM
New York, Sep 24 2009 10:10PM
The leaders of European nations today stressed the need for a more representative Security Council, calling for urgent reform of the 15-member body responsible for maintaining international peace and security.

Željko Komšić, President of Bosnia and Herzegovina, <"http://www.un.org/ga/64/generaldebate/pdf/BA_en.pdf">told heads of State and governments assembled at United Nations Headquarters in New York for the General Assembly's high-level debate that the Council's restructuring is needed to boost transparency and increase participation of nations, especially those directly affected by a crisis on the panel's agenda.

"We all have to be aware of the fact that any further delay in the reform of the Security Council will undermine credibility of this body," he said, adding that "the willingness to reach a compromise must be an imperative."

Also voicing concern about the slow pace of reform today was President Tarja Halonen of Finland, which she said "actively participates in the efforts to make this body more representative and efficient."

Her country, she <"http://www.un.org/ga/64/generaldebate/pdf/FI_en.pdf">said, values the key role played by the Council, which has five permanent and 10 non-permanent members, calling for progress on reform to be made during this Assembly session, which will run until next September.

Negotiations on the body's potential reorganization have picked up pace, Danilo Türk of Slovenia <"http://www.un.org/ga/64/generaldebate/pdf/SI_en.pdf">said.

"It is apparent that the expansion of the Security Council in various types of both permanent and non-permanent members has gained broad support among UN Member States," the President stated.

President Dalia Grybauskaite of Lithuania issued a call at the Assembly for the UN to "come of age" and transform into "the visible and credible expression of the globalization of politics."

In the face of numerous serious challenges - including terrorism, energy and climate change – she <"http://www.un.org/ga/64/generaldebate/pdf/LT_en.pdf">said required that "we work with each other or we suffer in isolation."

Spanish President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero also exalted the virtues of multilateralism, especially as the world is experiencing a severe financial crisis.

"This has not been, as has been said, the first crisis of globalization. It has been the first crisis of global governance, the crisis of an insufficiently regulated globalization," he said at the debate, underscoring that collective determination and coordinated action deployed in the face of the financial and economic crisis should be equally applicable to other world challenges.

"This same willingness to take collective responsibility for the problems and solutions, which has been forcefully apparent these recent months, should now enable us to succeed in responding to the conflicts and threats that still loom over world security and peace," Mr. Zapatero said.

The world is still navigating the path towards multi-polarity, Croatia's President Stjepan Mesić <"http://www.un.org/ga/64/generaldebate/pdf/HR_en.pdf">told the Assembly.

"It is not yet ready to face the fact that it is not a crime to be different and that our future can only be unity through diversity – of course under the condition of full equality and strict observance of human rights and in line with United Nations conventions," he said, stressing the need for multilateralism to quash major threats in the global arena.

For his part, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi of Malta sounded the alarm that the time has come for the Assembly to review the Law of the Sea Convention, as new problems have arisen since the pact was concluded in 1982.

"Among these deficiencies are the provisions dealing with piracy, illicit traffic in narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances, the rules relating to the protection and preservation of the marine environment, and the rules dealing with submarine cables and pipelines," he <"http://www.un.org/ga/64/generaldebate/pdf/MT_en.pdf">added.

Last night, Poland's President Lech Kaczynski also spoke in favour of Security Council reform, telling the Assembly that there was a clear difference between what was established in 1945 when the UN began and present-day concerns.

He <"http://www.un.org/ga/64/generaldebate/PL.shtml">called for UN peacekeeping operations to be more effective, saying the world body needed organizational changes to accomplish that goal.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY HEARS CALL FOR GREATER EFFORTS TO CLOSE GAP BETWEEN RICH AND POOR
September 24, 2009 at 10:28 pm

GENERAL ASSEMBLY HEARS CALL FOR GREATER EFFORTS TO CLOSE GAP BETWEEN RICH AND POOR
New York, Sep 24 2009 10:10PM
More must be done to shrink the gap between developed and developing nations, countries of Latin America and the Caribbean told the General Assembly's annual high-level debate.

Haitian President René Préval called for a new paradigm in international cooperation to replace the exploitation of poorer countries by the powerful.

"The time has come to confront the globalization that seeks profit at any price, elevated to a new credo, with a globalization of solidarity that alone can guarantee the eradication of misery," he told the Assembly. "The only vehicle for peace, stability and security is development."

He said the food, energy and financial crises that impose such a heavy burden on the developing countries are not the result of chance. "They are the direct consequence of the model of development and governance imposed on the rest of the world for several centuries by those nations that are recognized as powerful," he added.

A restructured world economic order is needed to strengthen the small economies on the basis of a just and equitable distribution of the benefits stemming from the production of wealth, Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo Méndez said today.

He told heads of State and government assembled at UN Headquarters in New York that "the unequal trade relations must end and effective policies of solidarity must be developed for the countries that suffer geographic and climatic adversity."

At the same time, the healthy political development of different countries must be promoted to guarantee that the more powerful nations do not interfere in local processes, especially when such intervention seeks to violate genuine democratic processes, Mr. Lugo said.

He called for an end to the "criminal aggression against the environmental," noting that states who are most responsible for global warming "are not assuming their obligations in face of the growing socio-environmental debt that they are causing, maintaining and increasing a clearly unjust situation that must be reversed."

Only multilateralism can solve current challenges, President Bharrat Jagdeo of Guyana pointed out.

"This is the most important lesson to be learned from the era of globalization and independence," he <"http://www.un.org/ga/64/generaldebate/pdf/GY_en.pdf">said at the debate.

Mr. Jagdeo noted that small vulnerable economies have had to bear the brunt of the global recession. "Even as we seek long-term solutions to bolster the resilience of our economic, the need for relief and support is immediate," he added, calling for the global community to restructure the debt of vulnerable small countries.

"The case is equally compelling for new additional flows of developing assistance to be delivered to these countries by both multilateral and bilateral development partners."

For his part, Óscar Arias Sánchez, President of Costa Rica, <"http://www.un.org/ga/64/generaldebate/pdf/CR_en.pdf">said that developing nations will bear the brunt of global warming and population growth, as well as being "responsible for accelerating the growth of a global economy in which the rich cannot offer much more than what they already generate."

Improving the situation of poorer nations, he said, will hinge on success on three fronts: strengthening democracies, curbing arms trafficking and military spending, and combating climate change.

AT UN, AUSTRALIA SAYS RADICAL REFORM NEEDED TO PREVENT FURTHER FINANCIAL CRISES

AT UN, AUSTRALIA SAYS RADICAL REFORM NEEDED TO PREVENT FURTHER FINANCIAL CRISES
New York, Sep 24 2009 10:10PM
Working people and their families have borne the brunt of the economic crisis worldwide, Australia has told the General Assembly's annual high-level debate, calling for an overhaul of global governance to ensure it does not happen again.

Addressing the Assembly last night, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said the financial meltdown and subsequent recession have been "a wake-up call to the international community to reform the institutions of global economic governance."

Much remains to be done to "prevent the unrestrained greed of unregulated financial markets" from wreaking havoc again, he said, despite the reforms already being undertaken by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Financial Stability Board and the Group of 20 (G20) bloc of major economies.

Citing examples of rising unemployment and declining manufacturing from his own country, he said the price of the failure of major institutions last year "has been paid by working people and their families right across the world…

"We can never forget these men, these women and their families as we seek to find a path out of this global recession," Mr. Rudd stressed.

He said a global economic recovery was far from certain and urged countries participating in this week G20 summit in the United States city of Pittsburgh to "agree on a framework to deliver effective coordination of our national economic policies."

The Prime Minister said G20 members should agree on a common objective for achieving balanced and sustainable growth, outline how their own strategies contribute to that common objective, and allow the IMF to analyse national economic plans "to determine whether they are consistent and collectively adequate" to obtain sustainable growth worldwide.

HONDURAN COUP HAS REPERCUSSIONS FOR ALL OF CENTRAL AMERICA, GENERAL ASSEMBLY HEARS

HONDURAN COUP HAS REPERCUSSIONS FOR ALL OF CENTRAL AMERICA, GENERAL ASSEMBLY HEARS
New York, Sep 24 2009 9:10PM
The recent coup d'état in Honduras affects all of Central America, the leaders of Guatemala and Panama told the General Assembly today, calling for the reinstatement of deposed President José Manuel Zelaya.

Deploring the Honduran leader's ouster, Guatemalan President Álvaro Colom Caballeros <"http://www.un.org/ga/64/generaldebate/pdf/GT_en.pdf">said at the Assembly's annual high-level debate that "what is at stake for the whole world is much more than President Zelaya.

"We cannot and should not accept the establishment of a precedent to remove a government through a coup d'état," he stressed.

The announcement of presidential elections to be held in the near future does not legitimize Mr. Zelaya's overthrow, Guatemala's leader said.

Since Monday, the Honduran leader, who was forced from office in late June, has been seeking refuge in the Brazilian embassy in the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa.

Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli Berrocal <"http://www.un.org/ga/64/generaldebate/pdf/PA_en.pdf">called for the return to the rule of law in Honduras.

He said that the San José accord, which calls for the restoration of Mr. Zelaya and calls for early polls, "constitutes the best method for formulating a consensus government that can oversee new elections and guarantee a peaceful return to democracy."

Mr. Martinelli Berrocal appealed for the Honduran people "to resolve their destiny and future with one another, democratically."

The call for the reinstatement of Mr. Zelaya by the presidents of Guatemala and Panama echoes the statements made by a half dozen other Latin American nations so far at the Assembly debate.
