The number of United Nations staff killed in this month's earthquake in Haiti has reached 84, while another 15 personnel remained unaccounted for, nearly three weeks after the disaster.
The toll, based on data received by this morning, comprises 40 civilian staff who worked for the peacekeeping mission (known as MINUSTAH), 24 military staff and 18 UN police officers. A World Food Programme (WFP) staffer and a UN Volunteer (UNV) are also confirmed to have been killed.
The number of staff who have not been accounted for has fallen sharply in recent days as communications have improved and national staff members have been able to get in contact with the UN.
The majority of the staff who remain unaccounted for worked for MINUSTAH, whose headquarters in the capital, Port-au-Prince, was levelled by the quake on 12 January. Dozens of other UN staff members were hospitalized or injured as a result of the disaster.
