UN POLITICAL CHIEF TO START FOUR-NATION EAST ASIAN VISIT IN DPR KOREA

The top United Nations political official is set to kick off a four-nation visit to East Asia in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), according to a statement attributable to the spokesperson for the Secretary-General released today.

The DPRK will be the first stop for Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs B. Lynn Pascoe on the tour, which will also take him to China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK).

Mr. Pascoe will visit the DPRK as a Special Envoy of the Secretary-General from 9 to 12 February, when he is expected to hold comprehensive talks on all issues of mutual interest and concern with senior national officials.

He will also meet with the UN country team and members of the diplomatic corps, as well as visit several UN project sites.

In September, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with DPRK Vice Foreign Minister Park Gil Yon at UN Headquarters
in New York, where he discussed the country's nuclear issue along with the humanitarian and human rights situation.
