BAN DISCUSSES RECONCILIATION AND REGIONAL ISSUES WITH KYRGYZ FOREIGN MINISTER

The reconciliation process in Kyrgyzstan, regional cooperation on combating drug trafficking and peace efforts in Afghanistan were the focus of <"http://www.un.org/sg/offthecuff/index.asp?nid=2230&cuff=2">discussions between Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Ruslan Kazakbaev when they met today in Vienna.

Mr. Ban said Kyrgyzstan's peaceful transfer of power was an important step towards consolidating democracy in the country and an example to other countries in the region.

He also <"http://www.un.org/sg/offthecuff/index.asp?nid=2231&cuff=2">met separately with Lamberto Zannier, the Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), with discussions focusing on ways to further boost cooperation between the United Nations and OSCE, including on preventive diplomacy and mediation.

The situation in Western Balkans, Afghanistan and Central Asia, as well as the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process, also came up during the discussions between Mr. Ban and Mr. Zannier.
